APFT Calculator
Calculate your Army Physical Fitness Test score based on push-ups, sit-ups, and the 2-mile run.
What Is the APFT Calculator?
This calculator estimates your Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) score based on the three standard events: push-ups, sit-ups, and the 2-mile run. It applies the official Army scoring scale to determine your raw score for each event and your overall total.
The APFT uses a point system ranging from 0 to 100 per event, with 60 points being the minimum passing score for each event. Your total score is the sum of all three events, with a minimum of 180 points required to pass.
How the Scoring Works
The Army assigns point values based on your performance in each event, adjusted for age and gender. The scoring tables are standardized and published in Army Field Manual 7-22.
- Push-ups: Scored based on the number of correctly executed push-ups completed in 2 minutes. Form requirements include a straight back, full arm extension at the top, and lowering until the upper arms are parallel to the ground.
- Sit-ups: Scored based on the number of correctly executed sit-ups completed in 2 minutes. The hands must remain interlocked behind the head, and the shoulder blades must touch the ground at the bottom of each repetition.
- 2-Mile Run: Scored based on the time required to complete 2 miles. Faster times yield higher scores.
Each event is scored independently. The scoring scale is non-linear, meaning the point difference between a 14:00 and 15:00 run is not the same as between a 15:00 and 16:00 run.
How to Use the Calculator
- Select your age group and gender. These factors determine which scoring table is applied.
- Enter the number of push-ups you completed in 2 minutes.
- Enter the number of sit-ups you completed in 2 minutes.
- Enter your 2-mile run time in minutes and seconds.
- The calculator will display your score for each event and your total score.
If you have not yet taken the test, you can use the calculator to determine what scores you need to achieve a passing total or a specific target score.
Understanding Your Results
The output shows three individual event scores and a combined total. Each event score ranges from 0 to 100. The total score ranges from 0 to 300.
Passing requirements:
- Minimum 60 points per event
- Minimum 180 points total
If you score below 60 on any single event, you fail that event regardless of your total score. Soldiers who fail one or more events must retake the entire test, not just the failed event.
Higher scores are categorized as follows:
- 180–219: Passing
- 220–239: Passing, moderate performance
- 240–269: Passing, above average
- 270–300: Passing, excellent performance
Common Mistakes When Using the Calculator
- Entering the wrong age group. Scoring tables change at specific age thresholds. Double-check your age group before entering data.
- Using incorrect run time format. Enter minutes and seconds separately. A 15-minute run is 15:00, not 15.
- Confusing raw reps with scored reps. Only correctly performed repetitions count. If you did 50 push-ups but 5 were not to standard, your score is based on 45.
- Assuming the scoring scale is linear. The point value of each additional repetition or second changes as you move up the scale. The calculator applies the correct non-linear scoring automatically.
Limitations of the Calculator
- This calculator uses the standard APFT scoring tables. It does not account for alternate events or special accommodations.
- It does not factor in altitude adjustments or other environmental modifiers that may apply during official testing.
- The calculator assumes all repetitions are performed to standard. Form failures during an actual test will reduce your counted score.
- Scoring tables are periodically updated by the Army. Verify that the calculator reflects the current version of FM 7-22.
Practical Use Cases
- Pre-test planning: Determine the minimum performance needed in each event to achieve a passing score or a specific target total.
- Progress tracking: Enter results from practice tests to monitor improvement over time.
- Goal setting: Identify which event needs the most improvement and calculate how many additional reps or seconds of run time reduction are needed to reach a higher score.
- Unit readiness assessment: Estimate overall fitness levels within a squad or platoon using individual test results.
FAQ
What is the minimum passing score on the APFT?
You need at least 60 points in each event and a total of 180 points across all three events. Failing any single event means you fail the entire test.
Does age affect my APFT score?
Yes. The Army uses age-graded scoring tables. Older soldiers receive the same score for fewer repetitions or a slower run time compared to younger soldiers in the same gender category.
Can I pass the APFT if I fail one event but have a high total score?
No. You must score at least 60 points on each individual event. A high total score does not compensate for a failing score on any single event.
How is the 2-mile run scored?
The run is scored based on your finish time. Faster times earn more points. The scoring scale is non-linear, so improving from 16:00 to 15:30 yields a different point gain than improving from 15:00 to 14:30.
What happens if I enter an impossible value?
The calculator will not produce a valid score for values outside the scoring table range. For example, entering 200 push-ups or a 5-minute 2-mile run will not return a result because those values exceed the maximum scoring thresholds.
Is this calculator official Army equipment?
No. This is a reference tool. Official APFT scores are determined by certified test administrators using the current Army scoring tables. Always verify your results against the official standards.
