What This Calculator Does

This tool calculates the correct tablecloth dimensions for any table based on three inputs: table shape, table measurements, and the desired drop length. It returns the exact width and length (or diameter) you need for a finished, well-fitted look.

How the Calculation Works

The formula is straightforward. For each dimension of the table, the calculator adds twice the drop length.

Rectangular and Square Tables

Tablecloth width = table width + (drop × 2)
Tablecloth length = table length + (drop × 2)

Round Tables

Tablecloth diameter = table diameter + (drop × 2)

Oval Tables

Oval tablecloths are calculated using the same logic as rectangular tables. The width and length of the tablecloth correspond to the width and length of the oval, with the drop added to each side.

The drop is the amount of fabric that hangs over the edge of the table. A standard drop is 8–12 inches for casual dining and 15–30 inches for formal events.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Select the table shape. Choose from rectangular, square, round, or oval.
  2. Enter the table dimensions. Measure the width and length (or diameter) of your table top in inches.
  3. Set your desired drop. Enter how far you want the cloth to hang over the edge.
  4. Get your result. The calculator outputs the exact tablecloth size needed.

Example

A rectangular table measures 36 inches wide by 72 inches long. You want a 10-inch drop on all sides.

Tablecloth width = 36 + (10 × 2) = 56 inches
Tablecloth length = 72 + (10 × 2) = 92 inches

You need a tablecloth that is 56 × 92 inches.

Understanding Your Results

The result is the minimum size that achieves your specified drop. If you cannot find an exact match, round up to the nearest available size. A slightly larger cloth with a longer drop is generally preferable to one that is too small.

Standard tablecloth sizes are often sold in increments such as 60 × 84, 60 × 102, 70 × 108, and 70 × 120 inches for rectangular tables. For round tables, common sizes include 60, 70, 84, 90, and 108 inches in diameter. Your calculated size may fall between these standard options.

Common Mistakes

  • Measuring the table base instead of the top. Always measure the tabletop surface, not the legs or apron.
  • Forgetting to double the drop. The drop applies to both sides of each dimension. Adding the drop only once is the most frequent error.
  • Using inconsistent units. Keep all measurements in inches to avoid conversion errors.
  • Ignoring table thickness. For fitted or floor-length cloths, the thickness of the table itself can affect the final look. This calculator assumes a standard table thickness; for very thick tables, consider adding an extra inch or two to the drop.

Limitations

This calculator provides theoretical dimensions based on a uniform drop. It does not account for fabric shrinkage, seam allowances, or pattern matching. If you are sewing a custom tablecloth, add extra fabric for hems and finishing. The calculator also assumes the table is a perfect geometric shape; irregular or uniquely shaped tables may require manual adjustment.

Practical Use Cases

  • Dinner parties and formal events. A 15–30 inch drop creates an elegant, floor-length look.
  • Everyday dining. An 8–12 inch drop is practical and prevents the cloth from dragging on chairs.
  • Buffet or banquet tables. Use a shorter drop (4–6 inches) to keep the cloth out of the way of serving dishes.
  • Outdoor picnics. A drop of 6–10 inches works well for casual settings where the table may be uneven.

FAQ

What is the standard drop length for a tablecloth?

For casual dining, 8–12 inches is standard. For formal events, 15–30 inches is common. A floor-length cloth typically requires a drop equal to the height of the table, usually around 30 inches.

Can I use this calculator for a square table?

Yes. Select the square shape and enter the side length. The calculator will return a square tablecloth size with the drop applied to all four sides.

What if my table is an unusual shape?

This calculator supports rectangular, square, round, and oval tables. For other shapes, measure the widest and longest points and treat the table as a rectangle or oval, then adjust the drop as needed.

Should I round up or down if my exact size is not available?

Always round up to the nearest available size. A longer drop is acceptable and often looks intentional. A cloth that is too small will not cover the table properly.

Does this calculator account for fabric shrinkage?

No. If you are washing the fabric before use, pre-shrink it or add 2–3% to the calculated dimensions to account for potential shrinkage.
