Hexagon Quilt Calculator

Calculate hexagon quilt measurements and layout details for your sewing project.

Final dimensions may vary slightly from target due to hexagonal tiling geometry. Odd rows may require partial hexagons depending on pattern.

What This Calculator Does

This tool calculates the key measurements for a hexagon quilt. You provide the size of your hexagon (the distance from one flat side to the opposite flat side) and the number of hexagons you plan to use in width and height. The calculator then returns the total width and height of the finished quilt top, helping you plan your layout before you cut any fabric.

How Hexagon Quilt Measurements Work

Hexagons have a unique geometry. Unlike squares or rectangles, their width and height are not simply the side length multiplied by a count. The calculator uses the standard geometric relationships for a regular hexagon:

  • Width of a single hexagon: The distance from flat side to flat side (your input).
  • Height of a single hexagon: The width multiplied by approximately 1.155. This accounts for the pointed top and bottom of the shape.
  • Total quilt width: The width of one hexagon multiplied by the number of hexagons in the width.
  • Total quilt height: The height of one hexagon multiplied by the number of hexagons in the height.

This calculation assumes a standard grid layout where hexagons are aligned in rows and columns without offset. It does not account for seam allowances, which you must add separately.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Enter the hexagon width: Input the finished size of your hexagon from flat side to flat side (e.g., 2 inches).
  2. Enter the number of hexagons in width: How many hexagons you want across the quilt.
  3. Enter the number of hexagons in height: How many hexagons you want from top to bottom.
  4. Click calculate: The tool will display the total width and height of the finished quilt top.

Example Calculation

Suppose you are making a baby quilt using 3-inch hexagons (flat side to flat side). You plan a layout of 6 hexagons wide and 7 hexagons high.

  • Hexagon width: 3 inches
  • Hexagon height: 3 × 1.155 = 3.465 inches
  • Total quilt width: 3 × 6 = 18 inches
  • Total quilt height: 3.465 × 7 = 24.255 inches

Your finished quilt top would be approximately 18 inches wide by 24.3 inches tall before adding borders or seam allowances.

Understanding Your Results

The output provides two numbers: total width and total height. These represent the outer dimensions of the hexagon grid. Keep in mind:

  • Seam allowances are not included. If you are using a ¼-inch seam allowance, each hexagon will be slightly smaller once sewn. You should add seam allowance to your cutting measurements separately.
  • The layout is a simple grid. This calculator assumes hexagons are arranged in straight rows and columns. If you plan a more complex layout (e.g., honeycomb offset), the dimensions may differ slightly.
  • Rounding: Results are shown to two decimal places for precision. You can round to the nearest ¼ inch for practical cutting.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing side length with flat-to-flat width. The calculator expects the distance between parallel sides, not the length of one edge. If you have the side length, multiply it by 1.732 to get the flat-to-flat width.
  • Forgetting seam allowances. The result is the finished size. Your fabric pieces must be larger to account for seams.
  • Assuming the height equals the width. Hexagons are not square. The height is always greater than the width for a regular hexagon.

Practical Use Cases

  • Planning a baby or lap quilt: Quickly determine how many hexagons you need to reach a target size.
  • Estimating fabric requirements: Once you know the number of hexagons, you can calculate total fabric needed.
  • Comparing layout options: Test different hexagon sizes and counts to see how the final dimensions change.
  • Designing a bed-sized quilt: Scale up your layout to fit a specific mattress size.
