How the Calculation Works

The calculator converts both start and end times into total seconds from midnight, then subtracts the start time from the end time. If the end time falls on the following day (for example, a shift starting at 22:00 and ending at 06:00), the calculator automatically adds 24 hours to the end time before performing the subtraction.

The result is then converted back into hours, minutes, and seconds. The calculation assumes a 24-hour clock internally, but accepts both 12-hour and 24-hour input formats.

How to Use the Calculator

1. Enter the start time using the time input field.
2. Enter the end time using the second time input field.
3. Select the appropriate AM/PM setting if using a 12-hour format.
4. The duration is displayed automatically as you adjust the inputs.

Understanding the Results

The result shows the total duration broken down into hours, minutes, and seconds. For example, a duration of 3 hours, 45 minutes, and 30 seconds means exactly that much time has passed between the two clock times. The calculator does not round or approximate — it returns the precise difference.

If the duration spans midnight, the result will still show the correct elapsed time. A shift from 23:00 to 07:00 returns 8 hours, not a negative value.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Mixing AM and PM incorrectly. Double-check that the AM/PM selection matches the intended time, especially for early morning or late evening hours.
• Assuming the calculator handles time zones. This tool calculates duration between two clock times only. It does not account for time zone differences or daylight saving time changes.
• Entering times in the wrong order. The calculator expects the start time first and the end time second. Reversing them will produce an incorrect duration.

Limitations

• The calculator does not support dates. It only compares clock times within a single 24-hour cycle or across one midnight boundary.
• It does not account for time zone offsets or daylight saving transitions.
• Durations longer than 24 hours are not supported. For multi-day intervals, use a date-based duration calculator instead.
